Workshop Updates: Oct & Nov 2018

Over the last 15 months, we (Jeny and Nicole) have developed 5, one-day workshops to help parents who Home Educate. Here is a long update about our upcoming workshops in October and November:

We want to let you know about our upcoming workshops in October and November. We have TWO NEW workshops: ‘Home Educating Your Child with Dyslexia’ and ‘Helping Your Child Learn to Read.’

These workshops have been developed in response to the large number of questions about these topics from parents at our ‘Introduction to Home Education’ and ‘Registration and Reporting for the Home Education Unit (HEU) in QLD’ workshops. We have been working for many hours to design and deliver content that will help parents to home educate their children, particularly in the area of reading and spelling.

‘Home Educating Your Child with Dyslexia’ is for parents who know or suspect that their child is dyslexic. Jeny has a wealth of knowledge in this area: she has a son and husband with dyslexia; she has done specialist training in teaching children with dyslexia; and she has been teaching dyslexic children to read and spell for almost a decade in one-on-one tutoring sessions.

In this workshop we will explore and demonstrate practical activities that parents can use with their children to teach them to read and spell. Jeny has put together an amazing ebook/PDF of excellent resources, articles, websites and assistive technology options for participants to use to follow through with what they have learnt in the workshop.

We are both excited to be offering this workshop to give parents the knowledge and confidence they need to help their dyslexic child develop reading and spelling skills while also reaching their learning potential in a home education environment.

‘Helping Your Child Learn to Read’ caters for parents who have children of any age who have expressed an interest in learning to read: AND who want to use a structured approach to teaching reading; OR who want to use a natural learning/unschooling approach to teaching reading. Whichever philosophy a parent chooses, the foundations for learning to read are the same.

We will discuss: phonemic awareness and phonics; teaching the alphabet; handwriting; sight words and spelling; and creating a language-rich environment. We will demonstrate practical activities to help participants learn more about written English and how it is learnt.

Our ‘Introduction to Home Education’, A.K.A. Getting Started with Homeschooling workshop is being held again on Saturday 13th October. Feedback from past participants indicates that this workshop provides great relief and reassurance to parents who are new (or new-ish) to home education.

If you feel these workshops would be helpful, please share with people or groups who might like attend. We rely on word-of-mouth to let others know about our workshops. Feel free to direct others to our website to read the testimonials of attendees.

The ‘Registration for the Home Education Unit‘ and ‘Reporting for the Home Education Unit (HEU) in QLD‘ workshops will be offered for the last time in January and February 2019, respectively. Why? We are going to provide these workshops ONLINE in a format that parents can access whenever they need them. Woohoo!

Newsletter subscribers will be the first to be advised of upcoming workshops.

Kind regards,
Nicole Reardon and Jeny Kinnane.
